pardon

Definition

noun
  • the action of forgiving an offence by a Parliament or by a monarch
verb
  • to forgive an offence
Example The political prisoners were pardoned by the president.
COMMENT Not the same as ‘quashing’ a conviction, which means that the conviction has been made void; both ‘pardoning’ and ‘quashing’ have the same effect.
